In the Commonwealth of Virginia, crimes are classified into two main categories: misdemeanors and felonies. Misdemeanors are typically less serious than felony crimes. An individual charged for committing a Class 1 misdemeanor could spend up to 12 months in jail or pay up to a $2,500 fine or both.
